DLA HRM And Motability Car was created by killbot99
Hi

I just wanted to ask a quick question for clarification because my husband and I have disagreed over this, I am in receipt of Higher Rate Mobility for DLA and use my award to pay for the Motability car I have.
However we are using the car less and less as I am going out far less and also the high cost of diesel makes casual trips unaffordable. My lease is due to expire soon and I am very seriously thinking of not getting another car. I don't think we really need one and I can honestly think of better uses for the award instead.

Will they pay me the award instead of Motability if I decide not to lease another car and here is the crux, is the DLA money counted as income, ie will it affect the amount of ESA that I currently receive or is it not counted. I am sure it is paid on top of any ESA I get, my husband is concerned that it is not and it will count towards our income and we will be no better off and will also be without a car. I just wondered if anyone could shed some light on it please. Many thanks.

Madcat.

Hi MCM,

Yes, you can elect to receive the DLA yourself instead of paying it to Motability for your car. As far as I am aware, this does not count as 'income' for the purposes of income-related ESA. Of course, it is entirely irrelevant anyway if you are getting contributary ESA.
