I am thinking if my son were to get a shelf stacking job, then he would have to disclose his autism to the employer otherwise he would never even be considered in the first place. His interview would be terrible compared to the average applicant, then he would be slow at physical tasks etc so the employer would have to know to make allowances or my son would get the sack for being too slow. I do not want to put him in this position of having to disclose to an employer , and also wanted him to not have that pressure of a job so that he could focus on his degree. The medical assessor seems to have chosen to take virtually no notice of the occupational therapist report. I have a feeling this may be because it was a private occupational therapist report?

Maybe we should see what happens to him when left to is own devices at uni - then it will be easy to explain his problems as it will be obvious. I decided to test him leaving him to manage his medication and he has ran out of tablets because i have not overseen it. The report says no problem managing this sort of thing. The thing is my son does not communicate well and so answered the questions at the assessment badly. Said yes uses mobile , yes does email. But he uses his mobile for Reddit (he cannot do phone calls unless extremely basic and to me) and I have to compose virtually all his emails for him but he sends them. I have had to take control of all uni communication but i see it seems strange when he is able to do a degree. I don't think I have any energy left to fight, think I will see how he gets on at uni and then if this is a struggle for him, then maybe I'll reapply for him

Hi
I am thinking about my sons PIP, I spoke to a DM. The cmmunication difficulties my son has the DM seemed to class as the engaging with other people rather than communication. I need to know whether to be awarded points under communication whether it has to be physical problems with mechanics of speaking and hearing. That was the impression I got from the DM. What about not hearing through lack of concentration or distraction? What about not being able to phrase and compose emails? What about not being able to talk on a telephone due to anxiety and lack of conversation skills? What about not being able to open up a conversation or simply be the first person to speak? (This last one may be face to face.engaging with other people and not communication but it still has a huge impact on communication) Do you think any of these come under communication please

The Communicating activity is about your son's ability to speak in a way that people will understand and also to understand what other people are saying to him

This covers the physical acts of hearing and speaking but also being able to understand what is being said or to speak in a manner that is understandable to others.

The obvious candidates for points are people who are deaf and/or mute or severely restricted with these physical functions.

.It can be argued that claimants with stress, anxiety or schizophrenia would also have problems but you must stay within the Descriptors to do this.

So (b) looks at aids or appliances that would enable a person to communicate so is not relevant.

Descriptors (c) and (d) may be of assistance but both require there to be a need for Communication Support, this is defined as;

"support from a person trained or experienced in communicating with people with specific communication needs, including interpreting verbal information into a non-verbal form and vice versa."

This does not have to be a professional, it could be a relative but you will still need to show the need for the person to used.

I think that you will struggle to show that lack of concentration or distraction are sufficient to meet the criteria. Written communication is not included in this activity.

Problems with Communication can help to score points for Mixing With Other People but I think you struggle to show that he reverse is true.

Hi, we decided to ask for a MR for my son in the end. Telephoned through a request today, which is the deadline. We want to send through a letter explaining why we think he meets the descriptors etc. We also have more evidence in the forms of a study needs assessment for uni. This assessment is not particularly daily living skills but I think it will still help give an overall picture. We were told we have 28 days to submit this and that an MR will not happen until then. I just wanted to check with you that they definitely do not start an MR before they have the letter stating why we don't agree with the decision and why, and our extra evidence.

They should wait for the info, but send it in as soon as possible as we regularly hear of the evidence and the MR letter crossing in the DWP's internal mail.
