PIP mobility payment and living in a care home was created by Shirley
Hello. I am writing this on behalf of my husband who has been living in a care home since April 2019. He was awarded PIP payments in 2016. When he was hospitalized in January 2019, his PIP was stopped. Despite being in contact with those who deal with PIP payments on several occasions, there still appears to be an issue as to whether my husband is entitled to the mobility component now he is living in a care home. He is liable for a small percentage of his care home fee as from this year.
Yesterday,I spoke with someone from PIP entitlement who after an age, informed me that they were waiting for more information from Suffolk County Council regarding Paul's care home payments. They are supposed to be getting back to me either Monday or Tuesday.
I am a bit confused by all this as, having read the government web site, my husband IS entitled to the mobility component of his PIP. Or have I misinterpreted what I have read?
Any advice will be gratefully received!
Shirley

Hi Shirley
Partly it will depend on the age of your husband and when the mobility payment was stopped. You said it was stopped Jan 2019, but not whether it started again between the hospital and going into a care home. You also haven't said when he did have PIP whether he had a mobility component. If your husband is over the age of 65 and the mobility component was not already in place, then he will not be entitled to it.

Hello. Many thanks for the prompt reply. My husband was 67 when they suspended his PIP as he was in hospital for a few weeks and was then found a care home place in April'19. He has had NO payments since then. He was on the highest rate of both care and mobility components up until that time, following his assessment in 2016.

Hi. What I should also add is the fact that initially, Suffolk County Council seemingly had agreed to pay ALL of Paul's fees for 2019. However, this year, they sent me an invoice for over £6000, stating this is what was owed by us for last year. I don't know if this will impact in some way on his PIP being negated. I have been in touch with Stepchange as I am not in a position to pay this amount of money outright. To be honest, it has been a bit of a nightmare, not least because SCC are not easy to talk to. I appreciate that covid-19 has made life so much more difficult for everyone.
Best wishes, Shirley

Sorry! One last thing. I contacted someone who deals with PIP last Summer. They were supposed to have contacted the Care home and SCC. Never heard a thing. After this, my husband had a serious health crisis. so I was more concerned with this and PIP went on the back burner. A lot of other stuff has been going on and I have only now had the time to pursue this query.

Hi Shirley
I'm sorry - this is getting beyond the scope of our forum. It's obvious difficult to get a benefits advisor in the current situations. Regarding his mobility, I would contact the DWP and ask about it. You wouldn't be receiving the care component, because that would go to the home, but the mobility component - yes. But although you say, it was suspended, you need to see whether any part or all of it has been cancelled.
