Help with agoraphobia and anxiety for PIP review was created by chumsmum
My PIP review form was undertaken over the phone by community law then I signed it in a hurry on doorstop. I didnt check it - was sent off - just had form back - noted things were missing - after posting on here and your kind answer I contacted DWP and said I had more info they said that I have actually been asked to go for an assessment .... so worried about this whilst no date has been given they are happy for me to send any info in
But Im really anxious about certain things:
I suffer with severe anxiety and agoraphobia and up until the last year had not left the house in a car or walking or attended hospital / appts at all
My last award I was awarded 10 points for the "does not undertake any journey"
Because Ive just been diagnosed with a neurological disorder over the last year Ive had to have three hospital appts as it was suspected I had MS - the rest have been by phone
To achieve those appts Ive had to take a regime of Diazepam for 3 days before double on the day and 2-3 days after - Im concerned that overall my agoraphobia has not improved I dont leave the house daily and have left three times due to appts in last year with my husband and under the influence of diazepam - Im ashamed to say also I get very hysterical even with these tablets
What do I put on review having read the notes Im a little confused and anxious that as Ive gone out 3 times they will think I can go out - the form was filled in with no change but Ive got letters proving appts in connection with my new diagnosis now and wanted to give them extra info - I dont want to lie or anything but they need more info (previously posted about additional info on the form about conditions etc) worried I will loose my mobility element because i went out 3 times and dont know how to explain how this affected me

Hi peanut,
When you had to go to hospital for the tests, how did you feel, both before you went and at the time? Your husband was with you, what help, encouragement, comforting etc did he offer? When you finished at the hospital how did you feel, did you need any additional support from your husband/other? How did you feel the next day, or days? Was how you felt the same each visit or different. Have think and let us know.

Hi LL26 - i feel so embarresed telling this
so I have to take a regime of diazepam 4 days before - double dose on the day and single dose each day after for 3 days
Before I go Im very anxious and panic attacks anything up to 3-4 weeks before
I have to ask my husband to explain the route - making sure we go on back roads (if this is not possible this again will make me overwhelmingly distressed) I have actually cancelled appointments before hand
this makes the journey a lot longer
My husband has to constantly reassure me - I can cry (as he says get hysterical in the car) ask him to pull over stop turn back - I feel like im going to be sick - my husband has said that at times my behaviour is dangerous to him driving
On the car journey Ive said i cant go and we have actually cancelled the appt during the journey
If we do make the appointment - ive been anxious / ive cried / said i want to leave / even during the appointment - my anxiety is so overwhelming i forget to tell the drs etc what i want to say - so even with diazepam i can still feel this way - he has to constantly reassure me its ok - has taken me out of the situation
when i return from the appointment im overwhelmed by tiredness my physical health will suffer and it can cause a lot of pain in my body - headaches - I think the diazepam useage can cause this too (the headaches feeling sick etc) - this has gone on for 2 weeks at the most after - my flare up probably lasted longer though
the last few months where ive had a large appointment far away from home Ive had a very large flare up - it could be coincidence with my other health conditions it could be added to by the anxiety of the appointment - this journey due to stopping and changing the route due to A roads took nearly all day - i literally switched off in the appointment after 5 minutes and cried - I couldnt explain half of what i wanted to say
I dont want people to see me anxious (flapping my hands / sweating / crying / worrying im going to be sick/ shaking) i try to hide
Because of COVID ive had to ask for special permission for my husband to attend appointments with me from the hospital
because of my agoraphobia up until this year I would not travel in a car at all - Ive had to do this this year - even with diazepam I can be extremely anxious
Then ive incontinence so ive wet myself in the car or hospital im away from a near toilet
I have to use a walker or crutches anyway so these have to be brought with us and used
Im always looking for an exit in a hospital setting to make a quick escape - my husband has to be with me at all times I dont trust anyone else
All of this makes me ashamed

i forgot to add i have rituals as well i always carry water mints a carrier bag in case im sick and medications - painkillers / diazepam / and a sickness tablets - this is even if i have to go the short distance to my local GPs - I smoke but obviously you cant smoke in medical areas / grounds so this makes me verey anxious - my husband will maybe need something to eat or drink if weve been a long time - I will insist we dont stop in the hospital - I just want to get out of there
this is all very exhausting for my husband my constant questions - constant needs - im ashamed of this - and we have often had cross words because of my anxiousness
