Moving to a Universal credit area and ESA query

Hello,
I'm currently in receipt of support group ESA (I have a carer and don't live alone so don't receive the severe disability premium) and PIP. I am moving to a full-service Universal credit area and just wondered what I need to do about this:
- Do I need to apply for UC or just inform the DWP of my change of address?
- Will I receive ESA whilst waiting to be transferred to UC?
- Will I need to attend appointments and interviews for UC? (I cannot do this due to my disability)

Hi annie-rose

It does not matter where you move as UC has been rolled out Nationwide.

What can affect your benefits is if you move to another local authority area and you need to claim help towards your rent either in the private sector or the social sector.

In answer to your questions;-

1) ~ It would depend on a number of factors as stated above
2) ~ Your ESA claim will stop when you apply for UC
3) ~ You usually need to see a workcoach before a UC claim becomes live but there are exceptions, you would need to contact UC helpline 0800 328 5644

I would advise you to see help from your local Welfare Right Organisation who can take your personal circumstances into account. You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help.

If I move house but nothing else changes (i.e. I don't seek any sort of housing allowance as I would be living with family) can I continue to receive ESA? Would I need to inform the DWP and would they then ask me to apply for UC?

Hi annie-rose

Thank you for your question.

If you move house and you do not have to make a claim for rent then you will not have to apply for UC and can stay on ESA.

You will have to notify ESA that you have a change of address, if you do not inform them, then your claim will stop. We have had a few members on the forum where this has happened to them. The best time to phone ESA is first thing in the morning, 9.00 am.

Thanks Gary, I cannot make phone calls myself so will need to ask a family member.

Would it be possible for a family member to write to inform them of the change of address?

Hi annie-rose

A family member can make the phone call for you but you will have to be there to give permission for that person to speak on your behalf due to GDPR.

A family member could write the letter informing DWP of a change of address but you will need to sign the letter.
