ESA and PIP on reaching pension age

I currently receive enhanced care and mobility PIP and ESA (Support Group) which is part contribution and part income based. My PIP award is ongoing (light review every 10 Years). I hit pension age next June and am confused as to whether I and my husband (who is 3 years younger than me) will still be entitled receive any benefit help from then on. My husband is my Carer and receives carers allowance. I am confused as to whether we should change to Universal Credit now or wait as I understand ESA stops automatically on retirement. I presume carers allowance would continue We have no savings but are in receipt of a private pension and presume any UC claim would just be made on our income. Any help or guidance would be appreciated as I need to be able to budget and am worried that we may be left with a gap between ESA ending and any other benefit we may be entitled to starting.

Hi Suki

Your situation is quite complex and I would advise you to seek helpfrom a Welfare Rights Organisation; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

You are quite correct when you say that when you reach State Pension age your ESA will stop but your PIP will carry on. Your husbands CA will continue as to whether or not you would be eligible to claim UC which is a means tested benefit would depend on your house hold income and whether or not you need to claim the housing element. This is why I would advise you to contact your local Welfare Rights Organisation.
