New PIP claim was created by AngelT
Hi I have finally decided it is time to apply for PIP as in the past I didnt think my medical conditions were severe enough to qualify. I suffer from Severe Brittle Asthma resulting in multiple chest infections. I have 4 inhalers, tablets and a nebuliser at home although at times my other half has had to call for paramedics because home treatment hasnt reduced symptoms. I also suffer from GERD, Hiatus Hernia, Chronic Allergies, Sleep Apnoea (which I have to have a CPAP machine for) as Mixed Anxiety Depression Disorder. These all exacerbate my Severe Brittle Asthma. Do I put this all in the forms as well? Also is my (hospital issued) CPAP, an inhaler spacer, Nebuliser (hospital recommended) and then my other half setting up my CPAP each night and setting up and monitoring me before/during/after needing the nebuliser considered Medical Aids for (from what I know of the form before receiving it) question 5 a/b/c about managing treatments.
With regards to the mobility I am unsure of the length I can walk before becoming breathless, wheezy and exhausted and needing to stop and rest but I know it is about 3-4 minutes and I am very short (4ft 9) and walk quite slow.

Hi Angel, PIP is based on care needs not diagnoses, and you need to match with descriptors to score more points, and then they judge on how you can do things safely, reliably, repeatedly and in a timely manner.
If you think you can match the descriptors on care needs and mobility needs then you should definitely apply for PIP.
DLA used to look at night time needs but PIP does not include this area. You can put all equipment in the aids section though and mention the needs there.
As for mobility they usually ask if you can walk to the end of your path without stopping and then to the roadside. Also they ask if you can walk the full length of a double decker bus without stopping. The rule of thumb is if you can walk 20 metres without stopping for a break, and if you are breathless and or in pain doing this. Maybe you can can measure yourself first to be sure.
Mention anything and everything in extra pages, preferably typed and photocopy everything or take pictures and send it off recorded delivery.
Our guides above may help you further in this.
Good luck

Hi Angela, I would advice you to become a member so you can access the members guides. They are invaluable and worth the subscription fee.
Try writing a diary for Week. It helps you to remember how each descriptor affects you.

I joined/subscribed and looked at the guides before posting originally. I've finally finished the forms but the certainly have made me extremely anxious and given me a migraine. I'm a bit peeved because the forms didnt arrive until 29th December. But finished them off today so hopefully they arrive before the cut off date of 15th January.

I managed to phone and ask for my telephone assessment to be recorded - they said they would have to change the date and the only next available appointment was March 11th. I said thats fine. I have to be honest and say these past few weeks have been extremely stressful for me, not just because of the impending phone call.
I've managed to get an app onto an old phone to record the assessment and all seems to be working fine. I've had a "courtesy call" today from them to confirm my appointment tomorrow and they told me my assessors name is Michelle, the call will be recorded by them and I should receive a CD copy of the call in 10 working days afterwards..
I'll be printing out my scanned copies of the PIP form in the morning so I have them to hand.
Fingers crossed!

Hi AngelT
If you have a look at our PIP guide at the link below you will see that there are a number of pages which include advice on telephone assessments. Yes, a lot of the questions are those that would have been asked if you had a face to face assessment.
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants
- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!
Don't forget to contact DWP 48 hours after the assessment and ask for a copy of the assessors report called PA4.
