Blue badge and mental health. was created by Natalie
So I got awarded enhanced mobility and silly me thinking I could get a blue badge because I would be entitled to a mobility car oh how silly of me haha.
I want to know peoples thoughts on this?
My personal view is how discriminating is that because I can leave the house but not on my own means I can’t have a blue badge even though I think for me personally if I had one I at least wouldn’t feel anxious wondering if there is going to be any parking at places I could go.
Seems like catch 22 from me hat I understand is you can have a blue badge on mental health grounds if you cant leave the house so surely if you can’t leave the house why would you need one and if you did get one because you can’t leave the house and then you leave the house surely you then won’t be entitled to it.
I just think with everything with the government they have made it look like we’re all being treated the same ie physical disabilities & mental disability’s but when you really look into it we’re all still being treated differently.

Hi Natalie,
If you scored 10 pts under Mobility 1e namely cant undertake any journey due to overwhelming psychological distress, then you still qualify automatically. Otherwise you can still qualify ( but will need to fill out the form) If the following apply.(I have copied and pasted the mental health requirements from gov.uk website. There are other physical disabilities that will also apply which I have omitted.)

•you are constantly a significant risk to yourself or others near vehicles, in traffic or car parks
•you struggle severely to plan or follow a journey
•you find it difficult or impossible to control your actions and lack awareness of the impact you could have on others
•you regularly have intense and overwhelming responses to situations causing temporary loss of behavioural control
•you frequently become extremely anxious or fearful of public/open spaces

Here is the link if you need more information. You might still qualify.
www.gov.uk/government/publications/blue-...lly-get-a-blue-badge

I hope this helps.

Hi natalie,

It because you need to score points under the mobility criteria. You can always apply at the council and go for an assessment, I have heard they are not too bad?

Good luck

Hi traceytracey,

my pip is ending in a few weeks, last july i send back all docs, forms, evidence etc to DWP/PIP.
I have not heard a peep from them, so cut a long story short, my blue badge runs out end of feb, same as me pip award.

Phoned up local council and explained to lady the situation, which is pip ends in feb ending 2022, and a i still await a decision on my pip renewal. Meaning i will be without a blue badge end on feb if a decision has not been reached.

Lady said.. phone pip up explain the situation to them, they should send you out a letter saying pip is ongoing bla bla bla. Then we can sort out blue badge for you.

Lady also said i cannot get blue badge unless i get pip mobility, which i always have had and still get.

I phoned dwp/pip lady i explained my situation, and said can she send me out conformation that my pip is ongoing otherwise local council wont give me a renewal on my blue badge.

dwp lady said no, we cant do that because your pip has still yet not been decided, even though we have had all of the forms. docs, evidence back from you in last july 2021.

So i said how am i supposed to get me badge if pip runs out, and youve still no made a decision ? lady at dwp / pip department said.. i can only send out the current mobility points that you were awarded!

I said my local council are not interested in that, they need an update conformation of my mobility situation. lady at dwp said, shall i send you the score sheet of your present mobility points or not ! i said yes, (now 7 - 10 wait for nothing).

I finally plucked up the courage and asked the lady at the dwp/pip what's happening about my pip renewal, its now been nigh 8 months since you received all the information.

She said simply i don't know, all i can see it runs out in end of feb 2022, no decision by anyone has yet been made, no one has looked at it yet.

I then said, whats going to happen with my pip claim if dwp / pip simply let it run out on end of february 2022. I will be without my pip payments?

She just simply said this.....well i think a day before your pip is expired, the system will kick in and will continue with your pip claim and payments as ongoing !

I'm a bit worried, as i thought she was a bit of lacking knowledge in her field as i suspected her answer was a bit of... lets say she was blagging it a bit.

I then went on line to apply for my blue badge via local goverment (council) website.

I filled out the form best i could, and received an email with the councils blue badge award criteria. Well its asking for tons and tons of evidence, etc. Worse than applying for pip if you asked me.

So i'm going not send off evidence, im going to let the application expire, and they will reject my blue badge application.

Then hopefully when my pip has been decided etc, i will then reapply for blue badge under the pip criteria.

The councils criteria seemed more stressfull in regards to obtaining evidence, than pip itself. and lots of the citeria never applied to me. like cancer, onkologist, do you have a mac millan supporter etc.

So fingers crossed hey.

Finally has anyone else experienced they could share as in regards to their pip ending and still awaiting a decision to be made, and was there pip still ongoing after the pip date expired ?

I'm a little concerned, after all the master strokes the dwp and goverment pull on joe public and claimants.

Should i re-phone up dwp/pip again near my pip expiry date and ask hopefully someone who has more knowledge on the matter at hand, or just keep me eye on me bank statement for my march pip payment ?

thanks in advance,

good luck to all.

Hi Mr Fibro,

I know I is a nightmare :( but I think the only way you can continue with your blue badge is to apply directly (not because of PIP). As DWP have said they can't say your PIP is continuing as there hasn't been a decision yet. I have this to look forward to next year.
Good luck
