Hi, I put in a claim for PIP last June and after a few hiccups like the form being massively delayed in the post they did let me know they had received and were processing my claim. I had a telephone assessment in November (worried about that because I'm autistic and I told them on the form I struggled over the phone and was likely to just want the call to end ASAP). The last contact I had from the DWP was a text on the 15th November telling me they had received the written report of the assessment and that I should hear within 8 weeks. Its now been about 12-13 weeks and I was wondering if I needed to contact them to chase up my claim. Of course I'm hoping it'll be fine to just wait it out as I find dealing with them massively stressful but I can't afford not to go through with the claim as (and I wish I was joking) my GP recently told me that my only real chance of getting mental health treatment tailored to my needs in this area would be to save money and go private.

Hi Jonathan T

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

I would contact DWP and request a copy of the assessors report called a PA4, at the same time ask what is happening to you claim.

I'm planning on phoning tomorrow morning, the truth is my parents have been telling me to chase it up for weeks now but I'm scared of making the call. I would get someone else to do it for me but last time I asked dad to he launched into a rant against the system in general when he got through rather than concentrate on what we needed. This may sound ridiculously paranoid but does being able to phone them count against me in terms of their decision making? I'm sorry my anxiety problems have been giving me trouble recently and I tend to think the worst. In my mind calling them = "ahah he successfully spoke to us over the phone so can't have any communication issues!" When the reality is that I have been putting this off since mid January because I fear it so much.

Thanks
Jonathan

Hi JonathanT

The fear you have is a very common one. When you inquire about your case - it is dealt with by a call handler. When you have an assessment it is dealt with by the assessor who is a medical professional. The medical professional is looking at your form and the evidence - not a log of calls to see whether you have chased your claim. If you can, try and get over your fear of phoning. The only way they would log anything about how you were over the phone is if you were abusive - in which case they would cut you off and log it.
