Carer’s Allowance was created by mactav
Hi, can someone claim the carer’s allowance income of £67.25 a week, without having a carer. I have read that if you have no-one to care for you that you can have the money for yourself. But, you must come under the criteria rules for it to be paid. I cannot find the rules anywhere. Is this true or bogus. Thankyou

Hi mactav,
If you are in receipt of 'old style ESA' often called legacy ESA, ie means tested Employment Support Allowance then you could claim what is known as SDP, or severe disability premium. There are various criteria that need to be fulfilled.
If you claim UC and haven't previously been in receipt of ESA then you won't be eligible for SDP.
The criteria:
1.In receipt of (legacy) means tested ESA
2. Be in receipt of Attedance Allowance, DLA at least mid care, or get PIP Daily living either rate
3. Live alone (without other adult) and no one gets paid Carer’s Allowance for looking after you
4.OR instead of 3. You live with another adult who also gets the relevant PIP etc award and has no one claiming CA. (In which case each of you may be able to claim SDP.)
If either criteria 1,2 ,3 or 1, 2,4 apply then you should contact DWP (ESA) and tell them you should get the SDP. If you have been claiming ESA for a long time and have never been awarded this you might be able to claim a backdated payment to when eg your relevant PIP award started.
SDP may also be payable on Housing Benefit as well, so you may need to contact your local council if relevant.
I hope this helps.
