ESA was created by mel-lyn
After receiving a letter for DWP today we are very confused. My husband has been on ESA income related in the support group ( he had the disability premium etc) for many years, he also gets PIP, both enhanced, I get carers allowance for him and also PIP myself enhanced and standard. In February he has a lump some from an employer of £8250 and will get a monthly pension of 229.32. The letter we received today informed us that he has been taken off ESA income related and put on ESA contributions based. It also shows that he has lost all the disability premiums. Would someone be able to explain why it has been changed please. We were expecting a reduction being over the 6,000 threshold but wasn’t expecting a big change like we have. The amount has reduce from 295.00 to £114.30. Big difference. Thank you

Hi mel-lyn
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is.
Welcome to Benefits and Work
Without knowing your circumstances we are unable to give you precise information and would advise you to seek help from a Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your circumstances into consideration. You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk .
I will try and answer part of your question on the limited information supplied. You need to check exactly what type of ESA your husband receives, he may be in receipt of both CB ESA with a top up of IR ESA which would enable him to receive SDP and EDP. The monthly pension would not affect his CB ESA but will affect his IR ESA £ for £ and therefore remove the IR ESA top up which would then also remove any disability premiums as they are paid with IR ESA and NOT CB ESA.
