ESA & Retirement Pension was created by Augustus
In a few months time, I turn 66 yrs and will qualify for the state pension. I currently receive ESA & PIP. Will either benefit stop automatically when I cloim the pension, or do I have to speak to a human-like voice at DWP to let them know ?
I am concerned about not doing anything apart from the pension, and they eventually turn around and say I have been overpaid - or worse, committing fraud.
Thanks

Hi peterlambri,
ESA is a work replacement benefit fot those too ill to work. It can't be awarded after state pension age. DWP should know this and as soon as retirement pension is paid ESA should stop. After retirement if you have limited income you may be able to get Pension Credit. See here www.gov.uk/pension-credit There is a income guarantee level, Pension Credit provides a top up. Please phone DWP Pension Service to get a pension forecast if you haven't already done so. An advice centre such as CAB will be able to do a benefit check to see if you can claim PC. PIP is not means tested and can continue after pension age if you already get this, and remain disabled. However after pension age you can not increase your mobility award, no problemof course if you get enhanced rate. Think carefully about your mobility now - do you qualify for this, maybe standard rate is no longer sufficient? If so, you should consider asking DWP to look again at your mobility award. (Daily Living can be increased, at any time.) There is a danger that you might lose any existing award as DWP could reduce your existing award, however that may be a risk worth taking in order to gain (more) mobility. Again you might wish to take specialist benefits advice on this?
I hope this helps.

Hi peterlambri,
I turned state pension age very recently.
I did nothIng about my ESA. I received a letter dated on my birthday informing me that my ESA had stopped. One last payment for 1 week appeared in my account the day after my birthday.
As for state pension, I applied for mine online last October and my first payment went into my account yesterday.
You can just google the DWP state pension phone number if you prefer and speak to someone but, as I day I did it online and it was pretty straight forward.
I am now officially an old fogey.
I hope this helps,
Regards,
Phrank.
