ESA change of address to a different borough

I am currently in the ESA Support Group getting the enhanced disability premium.
I am also in receipt of PIP enhanced rate for the living component, and receiving full Housing benefit.
I am looking to move out of the borough and believe my ESA will stop, and I would need to claim Universal Credit. I have been trying to work out the advantages and disadvantages of moving over to Universal Credit, and unfortunately it's looking like the disadvantages weight out the advantages. As I see it at the moment moving away from where I now am would be the only advantage, which I desperately need to do.Having said this I don't want to be financially penalised by doing this, which according to the Turn 2 Us benefit calculator I would be.
Veering off on a slightly different tangent I am overdue the dreaded work capability assesment( was due on August last year) I am wondering what are the chances of being put into Universal Credit if I was still found unfit for work.As my disability if anything has worsened I am hoping they don't find me "Fit for work" The decision of me having to apply for Universal Credit would then be taken away from me, which would mean I wouldn't have anything to loose my moving home.
If after the work assesment for my ESA meant I would still be in the support group and within a short time frame I did decide to move, would it need to go through another work assesment as I would need to apply for Universal credit? I hope this makes sense!

Hi craig41

From your post am I correct in assuming you are in receipt of IR ESA?

If you move to another local authority area and you need to claim help towards your rent then you would have to apply for UC and the housing element, if you are in receipt of the support group premium before you apply for UC then you should transfer over to the LCWRA without having to go through the assessment period. If your ESA support stops before you apply for UC then you will have to go through the assessment period.

What usually happens when you apply for UC and placed in the LCWRA group is that you will be re-assessed and have to complete a WCA application. the only difference between a ESA 50 and a UC 50 form is the name.

Don't forget to check out our guide to help you with your claim; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1] Claiming ESA guides [/url] in the members area.

Thanks Gary for your reply.Yes I am in receipt of IR ESA.
Would you know what are the chances of being transferred over to UC on my next assesment, which is well overdue? I live in an area where UC has started being rolled out.

Hi craig41

Your question is impossible to answer as we have no knowledge of the pace of the rollout or how they are doing it.

Thanks very much Bis for your reply.
I wonder if you can answer another question please?
When I receive the dreaded re assessment paperwork for my ESA,(which is overdue) would it be possible at that point to apply for UC,and be assessed? As I am looking to move into a different borough I don't want to go through 2 assesments in a relative short time.

Hi craig41

ESA is an indefinite award with scheduled reassessment based on the Prognosis Date completed by the assessor in their report, so your existing ESA award continues in payment until a new Decision is made.

Only you can make that decision about applying for UC early, I personally would wait until I moved if I was still in the ESA support group, that way I would not have to wait in the assessment phase when I apply for UC.

Remember the ESA 50 and UC 50 are exactly the same apart from the name, make sure you take a copy of your completed ESA 50, which you can use as a template for the UC 50 form.
