Telephone Questions PIP was created by Ryan
I have been helping my neighbour with his PIP application (first time he has applied) he is expecting a telephone assessment on Monday and is really stressed over it, he has severe Depression and Anxiety. I would be grateful for any advice on how to prepare him for the call and what sort of things they may ask him. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ryan

If you look at the Guide to PIP claims and reviews - there is a section on telephone assessments and the type of questions a claimant is asked at interview. Warn your friend that it is impossible to anticipate all questions and assessors nearly always throw in something that feels like a 'trick question' leaving the claimant wondering what's the relevance.

Hi Ryan, if you get to see this in time, I hope you can sit in with your neighbour, and anyway well done you for helping him. If at all possible try to record it for him, so there is evidence of, for instance, him getting distressed if he does. This would be incredibly useful in countering any attempt by the assessor to play down his mental health issues. One did that about out daughter, but with the aid of the recording and B&W we won.
best wishes, and don't forget to call/get him to call 48 hours after, to ask for the PA4 assessment report.

Hi Ryan

If you have a look at our PIP guide at the link below you will see that there are a number of pages which include advice on telephone assessments. Yes, a lot of the questions are those that would have been asked if you had a face to face assessment.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants

- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!

Don't forget to contact DWP 48 hours after the assessment and ask for a copy of the assessors report called PA4.

Thanks to all who replied to my post, it was very helpful having a list of questions that could possibly be asked, the assessor asked about 15 from the list so my neighbour was well pepared. I asked the assessor could she record the assessment but she said she did not have the equipment, so I asked if she had any objection if I recorded it she said of course not. I have phoned and asked for the PA4 Assessment report, hopefully it wont be needed. The Guides and Moderators on this site are invaluable.
