pension question v esa was created by reds123
hi all, i have a mineworkers pension that you can take from the age of 50 up until the age of 60 at reduced benefits or you are awarded the pension with full benefits if you leave it alone until you must take it aged 60 as this is the age it will be paid to you in full, as i am reaching 60 in a few months i have been checking up on what i can get from the pension scheme and apparently they now allow you to defer the pension until a later date and it will increase in line with the scheme rules. can i leave the pension for a few years without it affecting my ir Esa or do i need to inform the dwp that i have been offered the pension and will they make me take it when i am 60, or even worse would they tell me i should have taken it at 50 even though it would have been greatly reduced. i hope you understand what i am getting at eventually, many thanks for your time.

Hi reds123
Your question is outside the remit of the forum, we do not give financial advice about pensions, you may want to ask the Pension Advice Service now called Pension Wise. www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/pensions-and-retirement/pension-wise
You may want to think about deferring your miners pension until you reach state pension age when your ESA will stop, but you will need to ask the question if you defer your miners pension, will it give you a bigger pension or lump sum when you retire?

This is a really good site. Ask for a Pension forecast from your mineworkers pension. Read their website. If 60 is the Scheme age then you will have to claim it from then. The DWP can still count this amount even if you don’t claim it, as you are making a Conscious Choice not to bother. It will be taken off your IR ESA £ for £.
Google ‘ESA and Capital’. 6K you are allowed in savings before anything is affected. Also, *IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY* any pension ‘lump sum’ is discounted for 12 months. [Keep receipts though just to cover yourself].
Go on a benefits calculator to see how you will be affected.
