Pip review and what this means

Pip review and what this means was created by Chocolady
When I last applied for pip I got a copy of my pip assessment report after. I didn’t agree with several of the assessors comments but I got an award of standard care and standard mobility so decided to accept that. I now am filling in my review form and I keep reading the phrase « this is not consistent with current level of input or treatment”. My dr wrote a letter which accompanied my original pip form saying I have borderline clinical depression but I don’t take anti depressants as my condition makes me tired and this would just make me worse so this phrase was used along with “reports a mental health conditiion” as if I’ve made this up. They state that because I didn’t didnt seem to have a mental health condition to them on the day that can be dismissed despite my drs diagnosis. Further my asthma was dismissed as I didn’t seem to be breathing heavily on the day (Id just taken my inhaler) but this is also a diagnosed condition. At the time I was glad it was over and accepted it but not sure whether to mention my concerns in the review form along with the fact I’ve now got arthritis to contend with in both knees!

Hi Chocolady

I would treat your review as if it was a new claim, I would not bring up the past. You need to concentrate as to how you are now not what you were like then.

If you have a new condition then raise it, remember PIP is not awarded because of the condition but rather the limitations that result and prevent a claimant from completing a range of everyday activities.

The fact that if you can’t do the activity safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly or in a reasonable time, means you can’t do it at all for the purposes of the descriptors.

Check out our latest guide: guides-for-claimants/pip

Thank you yes I’ve been looking at the helpful guides. What I don’t understand is it says in the Review form. Has anything changed and when, tell us how you manage this activity now including use of aids and tell us about changes to the help you need or get from another person. So how do I fill it out as its a different format to the original claim. Do I say my arthritus in my knees is new for every activity where it applies and then go on to mention my other conditions. I’m not sure what help extra that would mean as I have lupus which also limits my mobility. Its all so stressful filling this out. Do they do assessments for reviews as I had one last time and it was a nightmare. Sorry for all the questions.

Hi Chocolady

You need complete the review form as if it was a new claim, if you kept a copy of your original claim, use that as a template, if you need extra pages to complete your review form then add them but make sure you number each extra page and add your name and National Insurance number.

If you have a new condition you want to add, you need to say when the condition started and the limitations that result and prevents you from completing a range of everyday activities.

You need to add all your conditions and what limitations they have on you completing everyday activities.

The same with medication(s), what medication do you take and why, they they have any side effects.

The review form is slightly different from the original PIP form, it is smaller which is why you need to add additional pages. DWP have brought out a new PIP form in January 2021 but yuou can still use your original form as a guide.

Take your time in completing the form, if you need extra time contact DWP before the due date and ask.

In answer to your last question 'do they do assessments for review' the answer is, usually but it depends on what supporting documents you send in, as they can do a paper assessment.

When you have your assessment don't forget to ask for a copy of the assessors report called a PA4, if you have a paper assessment then it is called a PA3.

Thanks gary final question, promise. If another assessment is necessary will I have to go to a centre or can I have a telephone assessment? I have spoken to a benefits adviser and they said it will be over the phone now but Im not sure if they knew what they were talking about.

Hi Chocolady

Since lockdown has finished only two members have reported being invited to an assessment centre. Many of them are still not open and it is much more likely you will be given a telephone assessment. If you were by any chance you were invited to one - you can always appeal and ask for a telephone assessment instead.
