Moving from ESA to UC - Year protection was created by CHUNKY
Hi
If you are on ESA Cont and you move to UC and have more than 16K in the bank can you claim UC for one year
after being protected for that year or are you ineligible for UC from day one?
Thanks

Hi synapse321
The first question I would ask is why would you move from CB ESA to UC if you have over £16k savings.
Remember UC is a means tested benefit, if you have over £16k in savings then you are ineligible to claim a means tested benefit.
The answer to your first question is .... No
The answer to your second question is .... yes, you are ineligible from day one

Thank you for your reply.
Am I right in saying that people on ESA conts will be migrated onto UC at some point?
Thanks

Hi synapse321
Yes, you would be correct. At present we do not yet have any details how legacy claimants will be moved over to UC. When we know we will publish it in our free newsletter which you can sign up to receive if you have not already done so.

The DWP have already started a media campaign over the radio that
those on WTC/CTC will be migrated to UC between now and 2024.
If that is any guide would you say moving from ESA cont would be a
similar time scale?
Thanks

Hi synapse321
I have not heard the message on the radio, but I did hear in Parliament a similar message.
At present I have not heard when it will start, but it would make sense to start with claimants in receipt of Tax Credits.
Thank you for posting.
