What are the conciquences of deferring your pension if you are Receiving ESA was created by Duncanbuk
Hello,
This is my first post on the forum, as I only joined today, I was wondering if any of the members have any information with regards to deferring your pension while on ESA, this is what I understand so far..
1, By deferring your pension while on Benefits, you do not gain any additional payments.
2, the .gov website states, "If you’re on benefits, You cannot get extra State Pension if you get certain benefits. Deferring can also affect how much you can get in benefits."
"You must tell the Pension Service if you’re on benefits and you want to defer".
3, It would appear the only way for someone to Find out is to telephone the Pension service, so good luck with that getting an honest answer, and nothing on paper, or from the .gov website.
4, I wish to defer for one year, just to avoid all the hassle of changing over this year as we have already had quite a lot of turmoil so far in the first two months of the year.
Has anybody had any experience of doing this and the consequences? Do you lose benefit ESA Housing etc?
Regards Duncan

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Duncanbuk
Sorry, but your question is outside the scope of the forum. I don't know whether any other member has had a similar experience. You could try and find some specialist welfare advice in your area advicelocal.uk.

In regard to the State Pension and not any Occupational Pension.
When you reach State Retirement Age your ESA will stop whether you have claimed your State Pension or not.
If you are entitled to Pension Credit as a replacement for your ESA (a means tested benefit) then a Notional Income equivalent to the State Pension will be deducted from the PC if you defer your State Pension.
