Upcoming Changes to Warm Homes Discount. was created by Nearlydan
Apologies if I’m posting this in the wrong place but this was the only place that seemed appropriate.
Until now the Warm Homes Discount was available to anyone who applied before the money had all been allocated and received PIP on top of a means tested benefit. It’s planned to change the rules so that this will no longer be sufficient and applicants will be required to demonstrate that they are also in fuel poverty. The criteria haven’t been announced yet but there may be something in the spring statement due very soon. Several charitable organisations have expressed their opposition to this change and the government is being pressed to drop it. The government claims that more people will be eligible than before but they also acknowledge that some 200,000 disabled people will no longer qualify.
As someone who has relied upon the warm homes discount (£140, due to rise to £150) and will, like many others, rely upon it much more in view of the upcoming price increases, I’m deeply concerned about this and would be interested to hear from others who may find themselves in the same boat.

Hi Nearlydan,
Yes I am concerned as have relied upon the warm home discount to pay for energy, like so many Tory policies the timing of this seems totally out of step with the reality of what we are all going to experience with the cost of living rise etc.
Prior to being in receipt of PIP I did receive the WHD as I was and remain in receipt of income related ESA, however I am not at all confident this will be enough to qualify with the changes this Government will come up with.
I am also unable to find confirmation if the £150 energy support for council tax bands A-E is applicable if you are exempt from paying council tax. By definition you are on a low income but I have not heard of any reference to whether those in receipt of benefits actually get the support.

Best wishes,
Gaddy
