Recording a PIP assessment was created by Shopdoll
Hi,
I have my telephone assessment this week. I originally requested a recorded assessment but there were problems with this and I was told I can ask the person doing the assessment if I can record it and get their permission. I stressed I was unhappy as I wanted them to do an “official recording” but booked it anyway under pressure.
Can someone advise what I should do if the assessor doesn’t give permission to record? Will this go against me?
Any advice appreciated.

Hi Shopdoll

I believe you have been badly advised here and there is a chance that if you ask the person if you can record, they may well refuse and stop the assessment. Afterall - they will have no proof that you are not recording after they refuse. You should not have been pushed into accepting an assessment without them providing you with a recorded version. You may not want the stress, but you can still insist on it. So you can ask the assessor - they may refuse and they may or may not end the assessment. Or you can do a covert recording without telling them which is not unlawful and a lot of people do even when they are expecting an official recording just in case something goes wrong.

Hi Shopdoll, several years ago we drove 20 miles to a booked assessment when they were mostly face to face. We had given several weeks notice we would record it, got our 2 tape recorders loads of cassettes etc all ready. Our time came and went and other people went in. There was flustered rushing about in the office. Then the manager came out to say none of 5 assessors on site were willing to be recorded. [They hadn't bothered to check in advance!] Eventually they gave us another appointment at a different centre 3 weeks later also 20 miles drive. So glad we stuck out for it as that assessor was very sweet to our daughter but wrote a rubbish report. It was having the recording that saved the day.
My personal take is, do you want an assessment from a person too ashamed to be on the record???
Best wishes whatever you decide to do,
Denby

Hello,

Well things do not change do they. At my second assessment a good few years ago, I asked that it be recorded. At first they refused, saying that they knew nothing about it. That is until I produced a letter saying they would record it. Then they said they would have to set up the equipment. They kept me waiting for three hours. Once things started the woman was kind and respectful, of course she was, she knew the tape was running, but once I saw what she had written ( The PA4) it was the same old twaddle, the same lies and nothing like what was said on the tape!
She did give me my tape on the day, it was an old cassette type thing and I had to wait until I next went home, so I could hear it in my dads old car. I drove to a lake with the dog and played it and burst into tears
I got my award at the Mandatory Reconsideration stage, so did not really need the tape. I am still glad that I asked for it and I think that you should continue to ask for it until you get it too.

All these years later I still have the cassette but the dads old car, and the dad are now long gone.
