PIP Mobility - PTSD, Agrophobia was created by Deb
Hi
I have recently been awarded PIP Daily Living at the standard rate but nothing for Mobility. I am worried about requesting a Mandatory Reconsideration as I cannot afford to lose the claim.
I have 2 disabilities that form my claim:
The first is a compressed nerve in my neck which causes significant pain all of the time and has now resulted in limited use of my right arm. This seemed to come about following a bilateral mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
The second is I suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression and agrophobia. This condition id debilitating, it prevents me from leaving the house and I am reliant on others to collect food etc for me. This has been since 2020 when i was subjected to the most horrific attack whilst out walking my dogs. Myself and a friend were chased and attacked by a man with a knife. The man was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
So my PIP award is 10 points for Daily Living and 0 for mobility.
My question is should or could I be awarded a mobility based on the fact that I am unable to leave the house? And could the 4 points awarded on my daily living for “mixing with other people” be increased because this is something that I am unable to do full stop due to my PTSD?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Deb

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum

We cannot answer your question as only you know how your condition affects you.

We quite often hear from members who have mixed results, the first thing you need to do is get a copy of the assessors report called a (PA4). Once you have a copy of the report you can then make a decision whether or not to apply for a MR.

If you do decide to apply for a MR you can state that you agree with the daily living component but you disagree with the mobility because ......

Understand that the assessor is offering an opinion when they say that you can do the PIP activities, tackling these head-on is unlikely to be successful, you need to show that the basis of that opinion is founded on incorrect information, so try and refer to your evidence to undermine what they have said.

Also, try and stick to issues that lead to your scoring points, I often hear members referring to the assessors spelling, as an example, whilst it may show a lack of professionalism, raising it as an issue isn't going to help you get an award.

Lastly, make sure that you understand the criteria that you are being assessed against you can put the best case forward that is possible but you won't score points if you do not meet the PIP Descriptors.

The Going Out activity looks at three things.

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. You are being asked about the problems you would have with working out how to get from one place to another, you do not need to be able to follow the route that you are planning.

Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stop you doing this. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.

Following a route - This activity about the problems you would have navigating a route. So are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent you from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if you cannot undertake a journey then you will not score points for following one and vice versa.

Dear Deb, so sorry to hear of this life altering event, just a slim thought - have you looked into applying for Criminal Injuries Compensation? perhaps if applicable it could pay for some therapy for you.
best wishes,
Denby
