Template for Carers Letter was created by Kieran
For PIP Review

Hi, does anyone know of any good templates by carer can use to write a supporting letter? Also is it ok if I’m fairly brief on the form itself but have strong supporting evidence from my carer and a support service I’m working with?

Hi Kieran

I don't know of a template for carers. My advice is that a carer looks at the PIP criteria and writes what they have seen and observed of your condition and difficulties and what they have to do for you. It doesn't have to be reams of information.

I can't tell you how much you should send in yourself. Some people write very little and some write a huge amount. People have to submit what they feel is right - it is all you can do.

They need to properly identify themselves; name and address, their relationship to you and how often they see you and more specifically how often they see you in context to your limitations.

Then, as suggested they need to explain how your limitation restrict you in completing the relevant PIP activities.

Lastly, they need to sign the letter.

Are you referring to an unpaid carer? Such as your spouse or family member, or to agency care?

I’ve been my husband’s carer for almost two decades now (so I’m an unpaid carer in receipt of Carers Allowance) and I’m in the midst of dealing with his PIP Review. I’ve filled the form in for him and I’m including a carers letter. My husband has Parkinson’s so we live a quiet and simple life to best manage the condition.

Essentially I’ve described an average day for us both, including as Gordon suggests, details that dovetail with the various activities (such as preparing his breakfast, giving him his meds, bathing and dressing him etc). I’ve also explained what happens on days when we go out to food shop or attend medical appointments.

At the end I’ve said they can phone me if they need any further information or clarification and have given my mobile number.

I’d include as much relevant information as you can on the form, and be sure to offer examples of your difficulties to demonstrate how your condition impacts each activity. Any evidence your carer offers should support your explanation, for example why they have to cook for you or help you dress. Don’t assume the DWP will connect your need for care to the awarding of points. It’s vexing but you have to spell things out.

Hope that helps.
