Carer Premium - ESA (caring for two people?) was created by jasonbudd1984
Hi

I presently get the Carer Premium as part of my ESA. This has been in place for a number of years and is for my Grandmother who is now terminally ill. Within this same period my mother has been diagnosed with a chronic illness, and as such I am an in effective carer for her now in the same fashion.

However because this premium was already in place I haven't done anything further about this, but when my grandmother passes I will obviously lose this entitlement. At this point I could restart the process again with my mother's situation, but I am wondering whether I can 'dove tail' these as it were.

If memory serves to get the Carer Premium I need to apply for Carers Allowance. Because of my ESA I don't get this but have an underlying entitlement, and then the premium. Can I apply for Carers Allowance for my mother as well at this same time, and have duel underlying entitlement as it were. Then once my grandmother passes the reason for the carer premium then passes over to my mother?

I don't believe any of this triggers a UC transition, and I am really keen to avoid this at all costs...

Apologies for long question, just rather confused.

Hi jasonbudd1984

You need to get advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk who will be able to take all your circumstances into consideration. Remember CA can continue in payment up to eight weeks after the person you look after dies.

You need to be aware of the potential knock on effect on your mothers benefit entitlement if she is claiming any benefits, if you claim CA for her.

You cannot have two Carers Allowance claims at the same time, the one for your Grandmother needs to be closed before you can make a new one for your Mother.

However, you can backdate a CA claim by up to three months so make the new claim for the day after the old finishes, there may well be an interruption in payments but if there is then you will receive a back payment for any missed money.
