new style ESA, UC and being a carer on PIP was created by smithy
I don't know if this is something you could give some help on.
I have had the PIP award for about 18 months now, and I live with my elderly mother who, up until about 8 months ago was caring for me (I have CFS/ME, depression and generalised anxiety disorder and a few other complaints).
The tables have turned quite dramatically since my mother took a fall and is hobbling around in extreme pain (knee OA) (she is 92 bless!) and I find I am having to do more and more to help her with bits n pieces, like cooking and housework and helping her get around by driving her places, medication reminders, etc etc. The physical aspect affects me and I get post-extertional malaise (overwhelming fatigue) and often if we've had a "day out" at the hospital, I'm in bed the next day to recover.
My questions are:
- will my now helping my mother out with daily living affect my claim for PIP, with them saying I must be mobile and not limited in my ability to be able to help my mother?
- as I have an award of PIP, can my mother apply for Attendance Allowance, and as I live with her will I be seen as her carer or can we say she has a need but she doesn't get all the help she needs (as I can't do everything she needs (and she can't do everything for me))?
- is there any point in trying to claim carers allowance for myself as I am on nsESA and UC and I believe that you cannot get any further sums on top of the total allowance anyway?
The truth is we are both struggling just to do the bare minimum to keep the house in some sort of good order and we look after each other throughout the day. It would be helpful to have the lower amount for AA to help us get a cleaner in to help with things we struggle with.
Sorry for long post, I meant it to be short but it's turned into an essay!! Any pointers would be gratefully received. Thank you. x

Hi Wendy
Welcome to the forum. Please go into your records and change your forum name. At the moment your full name is showing and this is open for anyone to see on the internet. Follow the link on how to do this benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
There is no need to apologise for your post.
Yes your mother can apply for Attendance Allowance, she may also be eligible for Pension Credit, I would advise you to contact your local Welfare Rights Organisation, including Age Uk for help for both you and your mother. advicelocal.uk
In regards to your PIP claim, forget about helping your mother, has your condition changed, if it has not then do not worry you are not doing anything wrong. If your condition has improved then you must report a change of circumstances to PIP.
