PIP and OCD was created by ELEANOR
This isn't a query; I just want to give some feedback. My daughter decided a few months ago that she no longer wanted me as her appointee. She had a telephone assessment to see if her PIP would continue. She has OCD and, when she was told she would be sent a letter, she said, I can't deal with letters. The assessor said, 'It's all automated.' She recieved a letter a week later and didn't open it, nor would she give me or my husband permission to open it.
She took an overdose two weeks ago but changed her mind so my husband was able to get her to hospital in time for her to be saved. She is too ill at present to cope with phoning the DWP and we don;t want to bring up the subject of PIP for fear of overburdening her. Just one more way that the DWP is not fit for purpose.

Hi Eleanor
I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. It's a difficult situation for her, you and your husband. I hope that your daughter gets the help she needs in hospital.
Thinking of you all.

So very sorry to hear about your daughter.
Might it be possible to ask the hospital to consider if your daughter is, [hopefully temporarily] lacking in mental capacity and that as Next of Kin you can perhaps deal with her affairs? The very fact she could neither open the letter nor let you would, to me, demonstrate lack of capacity to manage her financial affairs. Also if she has a continuing award [which I realise you don't know] I think claimants are supposed to notify DWP if in hospital for ?5 weeks which seems quite likely. The hospital may have a social worker who can help.
You might need advice about Court of Protection as your daughter has not given you Lasting Power of Attorney. There's quite a lot on .gov.uk.
Very best wishes,
Denby

My daughter is not in hospital. She was treated for the overdose and saw the psychiatric team who considered her fit to be discharged. She has been in hospital before and received very little care. At least in the community my husband can support her to put pressure on the community mental health team to do more for her. She is dealing with so many things that he has not yet asked her if she would like him to phone the DWP to sort out her claim. She has still to set up online banking and won't open her bank statements so we have no idea whether her payments have stopped or are continuing.

Hi Eleanor
You can only do what you feel is right for your daughter, and I hope in time, she will be well enough to ask for your help.
