DLA and PIP vs Attendance allowance

DLA and PIP vs Attendance allowance was created by Giselle
My friend is now a pensioner but is still in receipt of DLA. The DWP tells him he is on the list to be transferred to PIP, he has been waiting a long time. His conditions have got worse and he wants to try for a higher rate of benefits. If he contacts the DWP about this will this trigger an assessment for Attendence Allowance instead of the PIP he is still waiting for? Is it best for him to just wait?

Hi Giselle

Your friend should stay as they are unless their condition has deteriorated in which case they can contact DWP and report a change of circumstances.

Now they are over state pension age if they are not in receipt of the mobility component or they are in receipt of low mobility then they will not be able to increase the mobility component.

If they were born after 8th April 1948 then they will still be asked to apply for PIP, those born before will not.

Attendance Allowance is the same as DLA except there is no mobility component, AA is for claimants who have reached state pension age and not in receipt of PIP/DLA.

Just to correct Gary slightly (sorry Gary)

Your post says that the person is currently claiming DLA and has been told by the DWP that they will be transferred to PIP, if this is the case then they can still be awarded the PIP Mobility component at either rate during the transfer.

Reporting a change will result in a request to claim PIP and they will be assessed under the PIP criteria. They should review the
PIP Descriptors carefully to see whether they would be better off under PIP or staying on DLA until invited to claim PIP.
