Universal credit stopped rent payments

Hi there
We got a message in our online journal that UC had made overpayments of £809 and when I checked what had changed they have gone back to May when our award started and taken away any rent payments already made, taking our June and July payments down to £0 award, which in turn will mean yet again we will miss out on the second COL payment of £324, we missed the first one by 1 day due to £0 award on our first months claim. Our monthly award has gone down from £459 to £159 with no explanation. It’s only from going back through the last 4 payments and noticing the rent award of £299.93 has disappeared.
I can only think that it could be because at the beginning of September I had noticed our housing association was taking £338 since April, so informed UC of a change of circumstance and was asked to take proof in to the job centre, the proof I took was just a direct debit request list from Sanctuary (my housing association landlords) I was told this didn’t show a breakdown of rent/service charge and wasnt sufficient proof. I am hoping that the taking away of our rent payments is a mistake because of this and will be reinstated.
(I have since figured out that the £338 was us paying sanctuary’s underestimated service charges added on to the rent year after year, which has just finished so rent should be going back down to £299)
I am wondering if there is any other reason for UC taking away an awarded rent payment?
I am in the group that can’t work due to disability and isn’t expected to retrain or look for work, my husband only has the state pension coming in and no savings or private pension. I also get standard rate daily living and mobility pip.
I am hoping you might be able to shed some light on this?
Many thanks
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Thank you for your post, I come across your situation quite often with UC.

We are unable to give you a answer as we do not have enough information and we cannot give one on one advice.

You do need to see your local Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your circumstances into consideration to give you accurate advice; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk
