ESA - Does DWP label insomnia as a mental condition or a physical condition? was created by Faith
Hi,
As the ESA form separates physical conditions from mental conditions, I have the following questions:
1. Does DWP label insomnia as a physical condition or a mental condition?
2. Should I include insomnia in my answers to questions about physical functions? For example, the insomnia makes me utterly exhausted which adds to my difficulties with "moving around" but maybe DWP considers insomnia irrelevant for the questions about physical functions?
Any advice massively appreciated!

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Faith
I can't tell you how the DWP classifies it - but long-term insomnia can be caused by mental health or physical difficulties. See the NHS website www.nhs.uk/conditions/insomnia/. So I would mention your difficulties in both categories as appropriate.

Hello Faith
I'm with BIS, go for both as they interact with each other. Insomnia effects you both Physiologically and Psychologically, therefore it directly impacts your Activities of Daily Living. You need to spell it out to the assessor and don't assume they know anything. Good Luck.
