I find it unbelievable that DVLA makes partially disabled people have to apply for their road tax discount by post when everything the Dvla needs should be held on file specially if they have applied for the discount award previously.
I think it is discrimination when the service of applying for vech tax is made easy for everyone else except people who are entitled to a reduction. Who are made to send in letters of proof ect. This is sad that vulnerable members of our society with most needs are treated so badly by a government body in 2022.
If you go to the post office for your discount forget it they don't know about it.
If you go to DWP they say the post office should know about it useless.
But if you are really lucky and happen upon the Gov website and read through lots of crap that has nothing to do with you eventually you will come to a small piece that tells you that you have to send all correct forms to dvla and if they don't get lost in the post you may end up with your discount. Hey Ho good news is they make you do it every year. I think they make it hard so you quit and they save money.

Is a 'Road Tax Discount' the same as an exemption?

I absolutely agree Rob2453. It's one thing more to consider as we are wondering whether to come off Motability and buy a car. The admin of tax/discount, insurance, everything is very offputting.

Hi SueCC
Some people with disabilities get a 50% discount, and some people with disabilities get an exemption from their road tax.

Hi Denby. When I came off Motability they recommended an insurer to use as they said it may be difficult to get insurance on the open market and have no claims taken in to account. Beware of this as the quote from their insurer was very high and I had no problems getting insurance on the open market and they took my claim free years with Motability in to account. Just a thought.
Best wishes

Ooh thanks an ex nurse.
One job on my list is to call Motability and plead for an extension beyond 5 years. We went to all the expense and trouble of attending one of their 'Big events' only to find there were NO cars available to suit my husband's relatively simple disability. I will try to let the forum know what happens as though not strictly on topic I think there are probably many other readers struggling to find a replacement too.
