PIP renewal was created by mrs doyle
I am just about to make my first claim for PIP,I will be of state pension age (66) next July.Assuming I do receive an award, and come to renew it in July 2024 I have just read that This can only be done as long as I am claiming for the same health conditions that I received the award for and my last claim ended less than 12 months before you reached State Pension age. Is this correct ? Many thanks.

Hi mrs doyle,
If you claim PIP before you reach state pension age you can continue to claim afterwards. Whilst after SP age you can upgrade daily living unfortunately you can't upgrade mobility. Once you put in your claim in the next few days, and this gets decided, either before you turn 66 or later if it takes that long. (And this would also include any appeal if this is needed.) then whatever mobility award is decided this is all the mobility you will get.
It is therefore important to ensure you put in as much information about mobility now, if this applies to you to ensure you get the correct award now.
If you don't get mobility or feel you should have been awarded enhanced instead of standard, then do a Mandatory Reconsideration and or appeal to the tribunal to make sure you can maximise PIP going beyond 66 years.
It is possible that post 66, you shoukd get a so-called light touch review, which could mean a review every 10 years rather than in 2024.
As long as you continue to have disabilities to the same level or worse as when you claim, subject to any reviews there is no reason why you can't receive PIP indefinitely.
PIP is awarded on the basis of lack of function. It won't matter whether your health conditions change providing your lack of function remains. So theoretically if you have a heart condition that prevents you doing various PIP activities, and you have surgery, which improves heart function. But somewhile before the surgery you have a fall and that causes similar ongoing permanent difficulties you could continue to claim PIP. However it is likely you may acquire other health conditions but they won't be a problem, and indeed if they affect your daily living activities then may serve to increase PIP if you don't already get enhanced rate.
I hope this helps.
Good luck with your claim. Let us know how you get on.

Ive just realised I have a slight dilema here;at the moment I receive IR ESA and have a pension pot of just over 16000 which I was advised by my local council benefits advisor is ok if it will not be accessed until I reach pension age.So if I were to make a PIP claim now(ish)my IRESA income would be taken into account. But I have to claim PIP before Im 66.When do you think I should claim ? Many thanks.

Hi mrs doyle
PIP is not dependant on savings, savings are ignored for claimants applying for PIP.
Your pension pot is ignored, your local council benefits advisor is correct.
I cannot tell you when you should claim, only you can do that, if you are unsure if you will be successful then try the PIP test, it will not tell you 100% that you are eligible but will give you a good indication; benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-independe...nt-pip/pip-self-test. You do need to apply for PIP before you reach State Pension age, if you apply after State Pension age you will be too late. You will only be able to apply for Attendance Allowance.
