Preparing Food aids was created by Waxwing
Hello

I would like to ask please would a battery powered pepper grinder be classed as an aid (for seasoning) because my brother cannot use a manual twist pepper grinder because of a hard lump on the knuckle of his index finger meaning he has problems twisting and opening things.

Also would a slotted spoon and cooking basket be an aid for serving food from a pan of boiling water because he cannot drain water from pans because of his spinal osteoperosis and spinal fractures.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Waxwing

Be careful about trying to over-explain every detail. No assessor will care whether or not your brother can season his food - because it's not part of the specific criteria. If he can't open things - does that mean he has difficulty preparing a meal full stop?

Can he safely prepare a meal? You have said he uses the slotted spoon because he cannot drain water - but can he even carry a cold pan from taps to cooker in a safe and timely manner, or does he need help? Does he have the energy to prepare meals - are there times that he misses out - because he is in pain? Is he in danger of dropping things - is his balance affected? Does he have to stop and rest? If he has help - does he need more?

I'm not saying you shouldn't mention the slotted spoon and cooking basket, but just be aware of making it sound that he can manage things easily where there still could be safety issues.

Thank you BIS you have made some very good points that need to be considered. We are trying to avoid saying he has problems standing to prepare food which he does because in his appeal he lost they grilled him about standing and kept asking him how long he can stand and because he said he can stand for 10 minuted before he had considerable pain the tribunal ruled that he could could cook a simple meal for the majority of days because he said he "occassionally" went shopping. This was a claim made in 2019 and the tribunal in 2021 and his spinal condition has deteriated since then. He is afraid about mentioning his standing problems incase he has to go to appeal and has to go through all of the grilling again about his standing abilities only to be refused. We have a much greater knowledge of the PIP crtiteria not thanks to your detailed guides but he is still very nervous and cautious about what he put in his claim.

Thank you BIS for your advice it is most appreciated.

Hi Waxwing

Don't worry. I only saw your typo when you pointed it out, and I had already assumed that you found the guides helpful.
