Do you have to tell ESA about any new conditions you develop whilst you’re claiming?

I had a discussion with Welfare Rights about this and I’m not convinced I was given the right answer.

For example: I developed a pain syndrome whilst claiming for mental health reasons.

But I’ve also since been diagnosed with ADHD too and suspected autism.

Do I have to tell ESA/UC about my new conditions?

Hi AnxiousAnonymous The DWP always says that you should tell them if your condition has changed. They want to know when people's condition has improved so they don't have to pay out as much or any money. If a claimant's condition has no impact on their current award, it is common practice for people to inform the DWP at the next review. If a claimant's condition has worsened and it would mean an improved award - some people put in for a change of circumstances, and others wait until a review. Only you can decide what to do.

No it’s not a change of condition or an improvement.

It’s a new condition. A comorbid condition if you will.

Hi AnxiousAnonymous

What I said still applies - it's up to you when you inform them. You need to have had it for three months, and it will continue for the next nine months before the DWP is even interested.
