Hi there.

We're unclear on the rules here, and were wondering if there were any differences between income based ESA and UC.

If my parents were to pay for building work (external upkeep, replacing a damp bathroom) on our primary property, which we own, is that something that needs to be declared? They could pay contractors directly, rather than through us if that made things simpler.

I had thought that this sort of thing was classed as a 'gift' for ESA and did not need to be declared but cannot find much information on this now, especially with US (which we're going to be moved to).

Does anyone know what we should be looking at to get some greater clarity here? Thank you.

Hi Gateway

There is no differeence between IB ESA and UC as they are both means tested benefits.

If your parents paid the contractor direct then I do not see there being a problem, if they paid you the money to pay the contractors, then I can see that may cause you an issue.

I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk , they will be able to take all your circumstances into consideration.
