How does collecting a private pension(s) affect UC, UC50, other benefits eg CA was created by Diane
I would really appreciate some basic advise on how collecting a private pension(s) would actually affect my UC, UC50 and Carers Allowance payments. Currently got another 12 years before I can collect state pension. I have tried to read the HMRC pages on this but find it very confusing to say the least. I am also trying to contact CAB regarding this issue, not sure if I will need another Pensionwise appointment or not, think it depends upon how much actual detail I can provide second time around.
Other benefits I currently get which may or may not be affected: Warm Home Payments, PIPs for my son whom I care for. Would private pension(s) affect my UC council tax discounts? Very unsure what else may be affected or not.

Hi Diane
Welcome to the forum.
You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
A private pension will affect any means tested benefits such as UC and CTRS.
There are two types of income (in simple terms), that UC considers; Earned and Unearned.
Earned income is exactly what it appears, money that you have earned either as an employee or you have declared that you paid yourself if self-employed. Earned income is subject to a 55% taper after you have exceeded any Work Allowance.
Unearned income, is deducted £ for £ from your UC. Your pension is classed as Unearned income.
You mention UC50 in your post, if you are in receipt of NS ESA which is Contribution Based then a lump sum will not affect your NS ESA but a regular payment will. If the pension is more then £85/week then there will be a £1/week deduction for every £2 in excess of the £85.
You need to get advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation who will be able to take all your circumstances into consideration; advicelocal.uk
