PIP Video Assessment - Capita unable to record/claimant not permitted to record

On Saturday I received an appointment letter from Capita for a video assessment of my PIP renewal to take place in 11 days time. I sent my PIP renewal form back to them in January 2022 and it's taken them a year to get back to me. I'm rather anxious about having a video assessment as I'm not tech savvy. I would like the interview recorded but Capita's website states that they are unable to record the video interview and claimants are not permitted to record it either. I find this worrying. I'm being treated for stage 4 breast cancer and every day is a struggle without this extra stress. Can you give me any advice about whether I must have video assessment and any advice about not being able to record it, which I find very concerning. Thank you.

Hi Bettyboop45

I would ring and ask if you can have a paper-based assessment and remind them you are being treated for stage 4 breast cancer. I'm sorry to sound indelicate, but if your condition has progressed and you have been given a terminal diagnosis of less than 6 months, your review should be fast-tracked. If you haven't (and I hope you haven't) then you will still have to go through the process, but I would still explain about the stress and the stage of your condition - so hopefully, they will change the assessment type.

If, by some quirk, you have to go through with the assessment, you can make an oral recording in your own home without informing them. The recording is for personal use, and they cannot stop it. Just don't tell them, or they will stop the assessment.

Good luck

Hi Bettyboop45

If you are unable to connect by video they will do a telephone assessment, it happened to a relative recently, who lives in a rural area, video did not work by they were able to connect by phone. Everything went ok and they were awarded standard daily living which was what they were hoping for.
