Question about ESA stopping and housing benefit

Hello there, I have a question about what to do in a case my ESA stops and housing benefit stops as I don't want to be homeless.

I am currently on Contribution based ESA, I called DWP they said the Assesment is scheduled for August.

I would like to ask a question. If ESA stopped and housing benefit stopped would I get Universal Credit and housing benefit as part of it?

Thank you

Hi Agis

You pose an interesting question with options.

The problem you have is if your ESA stops you should still get housing benefit, you may need to contact your local authority and explain what has happened.

If you need to claim money to live on then your only option would be to claim UC, if you claim UC then you will not be able to go back on to legacy benefits.

I have known a number of claimants whose ESA stopped, they lived on their PIP whilst they appealed the decision. When the ESA was put back in payment it was backdated and they also received the disability premiums.

They did struggle whilst they waited for the Tribunal but their Housing Benefit stayed in payment as nothing had changed apart from a reduced income.

For claimants who do not receive PIP then they would struggle more, although I have found those claimants would be better off claiming UC proving they can get placed in the LCWRA group.

Gary, your answers are the best. Thanks. I'm really struggling mentally with all of this.
