Inheritance IB ESA and CB ESA was created by caroline webb
Advice appreciated.
My husband claims IB ESA this is a joint claim with myself I am on CB ESA Support Group.
I have been left money which will take me over the threshold limit.
As this is a joint claim I presume ESA will need to be informed when I receive the money in my account even though I am on CB. (is that correct).
Assuming correct, what information will I need to get together to send.
Also, for info. I am the Executor of the estate and retire in less than 18 months.

First of all your real name appears to be your forum name, I would recommend that you change this as soon as possible, see
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
You are currently part of your husband's household and therefore any saving and assets you possess will count against his IB ESA, if the total for both of you is more than £6000 then there will a deduction from his ESA at the rate of £1/week for every £250 in excess. Over, £16,000 then he loses entitlement to IB ESA altogether, however if he is also entitled to CB ESA as you are then this will remain in payment.
What to send, when you are in control of the money in your own right you need to notify the DWP of how much you are receiving, I would send copies of any documents associated with the inheritance, they will ask for any additional information as they need it.
I would write to the DWP and send it using a Tracked post, I would also phone them but leave it a few days after the delivery so that you can also confirm receipt of the letter.

Thanks for the information. The amount will be above the upper threshold of £16000 I am on contribution based esa already (support group). when this change takes place (soon hopefully), my husband will remain on ESA contribution based part (support group). Both retire in less than 18mths. Both high rate pip. I think we lose all premiums too. My worry is not only coping with all this change but will the change kick us towards Universal Credit or will the legacy benefits remain.
Thanks

Hi waspi
If household savings are above £16k then any means tested benefits will stop such as IR ESA, Council tax benefit, Universal Credit.
Premiums are paid with Income Based benefits, if your savings go over £16k then yes your disability premiums will stop.
Your CB ESA will stay the same along with your PIP claims.
Unless your savings go below £16k then you will not be able to claim Universal Credit as Universal Credit is means tested. Once your savings go below £16k then you will be able to claim UC but remember your CB ESA will be deducted from your UC £ for £.
I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation for help before you apply for UC.

Thank you for clarification. I know now what to expect. Am I correct in saying neither of us would be able to get carers but qualify for “underlying entitlement” but still £0. Thanks

ESA(CB) and Carers Allowance are overlapping benefits this means that only the highest paying of the two will actually be paid, normally the ESA but you do retain an underlying entitlement to the CA even if it is not being paid.
