Contribution ESA to Income Based. was created by DarrenL
Hi everyone, I am currently on contribution based ESA in the support group. I am profoundly Deaf and have a degenerative spine condition along with anxiety generated by Deafness and constant pain in my spine and joints.

I am also in receipt of Carers Allowance as my 88 year old mum lives with me who has one lung, heart attack and deep skin cancer.

I receive PIP enhanced on both at the moment and am awaiting my review - paperwork sent in Sept, 2022.

My question is this my savings have now fallen below the trigger limit of 16k due to the cost of living, caring for mum and not able to work due to my own concerns. Deafness being paramount along with pain. How easy is it to change from contribution based ESA to Income based? I have a small private pension which is £315 a month.

I am also nervous about my PIP review as I don’t have anyone to talk on my behalf. I can’t use the phone, mum use to do my support work.

Thank you

If you are on New Style ESA then your only option is to claim UC.

If you are on legacy ESA then subject to your circumstances you can ask the DWP to add an Income Related payment to your existing ESA(CB), I want to stress that this does not require a claim for UC if someone tells you this.

However, your pension which I suspect does not get deducted from your current ESA(CB) payments will be deducted £ for £ from any ESA(IR) you might be eligible to receive and may in fact prevent payment altogether.

I would seek face to face advice from a trained advisor who can calculate how your ESA might be affected.
