Hi Bunny1

When a paper-based assessment is made for PIP - the assessor should complete a PA3.

Recently we have learned from a number of members who have had a paper-based assessment that when they contacted the DWP for a copy of the PA3 - they were told the decision was made without a report being written. There is nothing you can do about this. It does not stop you from putting in for an MR if you receive a decision you do not agree with.

You can only put in for an MR when you have received your decision letter. There is no point in trying to tell them that you might want to do one now.

If you have to put in for an MR - you can send in any additional information you think is relevant.

Yes, you can include a letter from your mother. It is always worth sending a letter from a relative with any relevant information they can give.

When you get the decision, you have four weeks from the date on the decision letter to put in for a Mandatory Reconsideration.

thanks so much for this. my goodness i cant believe they can make a decision without doing an assessors report especially when you are already on pip and yr health is worse! it seems beyond belief what they are legally able to get away with! IF there is no PA3 - do they still give reason why they have denied your claim /review in decision letter ? so i have something to work on during my MR?? all this is making me soo ill. i dread the post everyday! many thanks

Hi Bunny1

Even if a PA3 report is not completed, you will still receive a letter explaining the decision.

If the letter is not what you hoped for, you can also ring the DWP and ask for a call back from a case manager, who should give you an explanation behind the decision. For example - if they think your health has improved - they should explain why and what evidence they have for their conclusions.

If you put in for an MR, you have one month from the date on the decision letter - which normally means about three weeks. You can ask for an extension - but they don't have to grant one. Don't wait until the last minute to request one.
