Which one of us should claim carers allowance? Me or my mum?

Hi, I'm quite badly physically disabled and have been living on my own. I've been getting home help independently. My mum has started developing Alzheimer's -type symptoms but is not regular Alzheimer's. I'm having a stay with me. I'm caring for her due to her need for supervision and her anxiety and confusion. And she is helping me with my care needs. My question is which one of us if anyone, should claim carers allowance, we are both caring for each other? Thank you

Hi James77

A person is eligible to claim Carer's allowance if they care for someone for 35 hours a week. If your mum needs supervision and is suffering from anxiety and is confused, she may not be able to argue that she can look after you for 35 hours a week. If the support you offer your mum with her difficulties amounts to 35 hours a week, there is nothing to stop you from applying.

There is a second more fundamental requirement, the caree needs to be in receipt of DLA HRC or MRC or PIP Daily Living, there are some other options.

You don't mention either of you receiving an eligible benefit.

Hi James77

Before you do anything I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation, as both Gordon and BIS have stated, you need to have a qualifying benefit, but claiming carers allowance can also have a negative impact on your current benefit which is why you need to seek advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation, who will be able to take both your circumstances into account to give you accurate advice: advicelocal.uk
