nearly 30 years ago , we were thrown into the world of disability and welfare , in a life changing event . I have been a carer nearly 30 years now . I had to adapt, re-educate, and get to grips with this new life. I did , sucessfully. But it has its price.

Since finally leaving employment as a experience CAB and L A welfare rights officer 10 years ago, due to ill health on both our part. I finally got a dx.

But , it took me 2 years to finally admit I needed extra help and my condition was getting worse and needs greater.
I have always felt, one needs to finally admit they need help , and reaching that point can take time.

Because , health , welfare and disbility has been a big part of my life for 30 years , I wanted to maintain my knowledge, ' just in case ' ....I do return to employment one day...albeit voluntary.

I have kept up to date with all changes , legislation and new info , becoming a member of B&W and using only this site, along side with the Disability Rights Handbook and the CPAG guide to Welfare Benefits.

In 10 years , I have seen so many drastic, (punitive) changes in the DWP. And now the DWP is unrecognisable compared to 29 years ago , when I was thrown into the world of disability and welfare when my Husband had his first CVA's.

Believe me! Once upon a time , the DWP provided a genuine service , not a punitive sentence!

Even with my own chronic health issues and disabilities, I share the same anxities and worries re my claims for PIP and ESA over the years. It not easy...even for someone like me. I find the whole process just sickening.

However , rights to welfare support and justice , is now in my DNA .

I have in the last 8 years, offered help where I can to close friends , who have fallen into ill health , with new claims, using this site and guides.

Once again , I recently helped a friend with a newly dx debilitating autoimmune disease that has stopped her life in its tracks . Terribly distressing.

I patiently waited for her to accept my offer of help , it was her decision only , she finally sucummed , her treatment after nearly 18 months , is not working.

. I suggested signing up with you . We went for PIP first. She downloaded the guide and from there, with my experience of submitting evidence , we successfully claimed SR Living and ER Mob.

Then we went for New Style ESA . A new one for me . Not UC .
Again , sucessfully placed in the Support Group. !

Thank You B&W.....!! Again !

Now a new one again, my twin grandsons....now 12 ....one with dx Epilepsy , 3 years ago...one with now confirmed severe ADHD ...requiring a lot of prompting and supervision...

My daughter has finally completed a dla test , ( after 2 years of nagging ) and it came back , make a claim, and she has finally admitted....what she thought was 'normal' for them...is not for others...

wish me luck! Any signposting would be appreciated.

RD .

Hi Raindaisy

Thank you for your post. It was interesting to read about the changing face of the DWP!

You can find all the information about DLA here benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/dla. I wish you luck in supporting your daughter to get your grandsons the extra help they need. You are obviously very diligent in reading the guides, so the only bit of advice I have is to try and stop your daughter from underplaying their difficulties. I know from my own family that it can be very hard for a parent to admit some of the complex difficulties that the children they love and feel so protective of have and put those down on paper for the scrutiny of strangers. Wish you both luck.
