change of circumstances

Hi, I received several years of ESA arrears in April 2022. My savings now changed as I paid off debt, bought some stuff I needed, helped other people out, etc.

My local authority, Haringey Council, is a bit like a rabid dog: better not wake it. I try to interact as little as possible with it, (the last time I did I was almost being evicted for bogus reasons after I sent them my bank statements and a witch trial had been conducted against me. I was being evicted unfairly and with no evidence and fought back robustly and won. This happened before I got my arrears, when I was literally counting pennies and I had not paid for electricity and other basic bills for years. So instead of helping, I was being sent on the streets to die....Or so Haringey Council thought).

But obviously I don't want to fail to do anything I should be doing. Simple question and probably a dumb one, but if my savings changed, I should submit a change of circumstances, correct?

Thank you.

Without more detail, all I can give you is a generic answer. the capital limits for Income Related ESA are;

£0 - £6000 -- no impact and no need to notify the DWP

£6001 - £16,000 -- Must be notified to DWP. £1/week deduction for every £250 in excess of the £6000

£16,000+ -- Must be notified to DWP. Loss of entitlement to ESA(IR).

Housing benefit rules are the same, however, deductions are made through any ESA(IR) award.

Thank you, Gordon.

My savings currently are about £11,000. By the way, wow, I have to notify the DWP too, as you say. I was completely being oblivious to this! I was aware about how you are given one year for savings over £16000 ( I received even more than that in arrears, which still blows my mind. I just have been incredibly lucky) and the arrears received not affecting, as savings, your other entitlements, but after one year the savings become like any other.

Wow, thanks for the heads up! Stupid me was completely being oblivious to this, which I myself find puzzling. As for Haringey Council, I am not sure what I should do, but as they say, tell them anyways. At least I'll have nothing on my conscience and left no stone unturned.

Thanks again.

I don't see any need for you to contact Haringey Council, any deductions that are needed will be made from your ESA(IR) not any Hosing Benefit you receive.

Thank you, Gordon.

Just one last question, won't I have to pay Council Tax (i.e. no Council tax Support) if my savings are over £10,000 ?

Or do I still get CTS just because I am still receiving ESA ?

also, do you think that bank statements for the last two months would be sufficient? Thanks.
