Hi Schopenhauer
You have confused me with your savings figure of £10k, this figure only applies to those of state pension age, if you are below SP age the the figure will be savings less than £6k.
If you have savings above £6k if you are below SP age and below £16k, then any savings between these limits are subject to tariff income, every bundle of £250 or part off above £6k is subjected to £1.00 tariff income.
This applies to both DWP and local authority, LA use verification frame to check your eligibility, DWP use their own system. You need to notify each department, you cannot rely on one department informing the other, although they frequently do, they used to use system called ATLAS.
If you check the paperwork you have signed it usually states that you have to inform them of any change in your circumstances, if they have asked you for copies of your bank(s) statement and you do not then your claim may be suspended.

Hi Schopenhauer
It would make no difference being self employed.

Hi Gary,
Thank you again. I am indeed under SP age. Informing each department separately makes sense. How do I do this? Do I send bank statements for the last several months, or do I send a written declaration and wait for the DWP and the LA to ask me bank statements for a specific period?
To me the latter doesn't make much sense, as I expect to be treated with suspicion, not the opposite. What I usually do is simply to provide all the info I have, including bank statements, and put under the nose of the DWP and the LA. I don't really wait for them to tell me: "Ok you told us something, now prove it.".
Shouldn't I just declare the savings and send all the bank statements of any and all bank accounts? Or is declaring these savings done ino another way?
I never had any savings before in my life, that's why I am asking. Thank you so much for your patience.

It is up to you what you send, as I said previously I would inform then that your savings and assets are now over £6000 and then wait to see what information they request and for what period.
However, if you want to send your bank statements, they may still ask for additional information, then you will need to cover the period from when you exceeded the £6000 until the date of your letter.
Remember, the requirement is all of your assets and savings, so this may include items not covered by your bank statements.

Thanks again, Gordon. Indeed I do have assets that I bought and intend to resell at a profit. Bank statements show about £ 8000 savings, and the assets are worth about £ 3000-3500.
I'll then send a written declaration to both the DWP and the LA that my savings exceed £6000 and that I have some assets I bought to resell for a profit, as self-employed.
Thank you all for the patience, and I wish you all the best.
