As far as I am aware Council Tax Support is not means tested.

I would not supply anything at this time, if the DWP want bank statements then they will ask, if they do the do then the request will likely cover the period since you exceed the £6000 limit.

Thanks again, Gordon.

I am not clear about how do I notify the DWP in relation to my savings. I thought I must send bank statements to back up what I declare. Do you mean I can simply send the DWP a signed declaration about how much savings I have, and then if it wants to see bank statements, it will ask?

Also, about Council Tax Support not being means tested, I have noticed that when I enter different savings on a benefit calculator, I get different results, i.e. if I enter less than £ 10,000 savings, I get full CTS, but not if I enter more. Any idea about that?

Many thanks.

Hi Schopenhauer

I hate to bring bad news, but Council Tax Support is means tested.

Which benefits are means-tested?

Depending on your income and how much capital you have, you may be entitled to means-tested benefits. The means-tested benefits are:

Cold Weather Payment
Council Tax Support
Housing Benefit
Income Support
Pension Credit
Universal Credit

IR ESA and IR JSA are also means tested along with Child Benefit.

You need to inform DWP when your savings go over £6k if under State Pension age or £10k if over State Pension age.

Hi Gary,

Thanks. Yeah, I kind of knew CTS is means tested....as I had explained before, to check if I would have to pay CTS, I entered more than £ 10,000 savings and I noticed I would have to pay about £100 a month for CT until the savings drop below 10,000.

I don't have a problem at all paying for tax the law says I must pay. That must mean I can pay it, which is the case.

But this is why I asked before if I'd have to declare the savings to Haringey Council as well as to the DWP.

And also, how do I do this exactly? I thought I would have to send bank statements right away but Gordon earlier suggested I don't, and have the DWP ask first.

I am a bit confused as to how exactly I declare my savings, in writing. Do I just send the DWP and Haringey Council a written declaration without bank statements?

Sorry for being a pain....thanks!

PS. Also, I am actually self-employed on low income. Should have made it clear before but forgot, sorry.
