Hi - I'm new on here --- its a bit last minute I know. I am having a telephone PIP Assessment tomorrow morning. I am nominated person to act on my sons behalf . He has chronic fatigue for 15 years. On the PIP form I stated that his medication was psychotherapy once per week for over a year and still current. Is this classed as medication. I think so as it helps him with his condition. He finds it supportive and encouraging and severely reduces stress for him.

Yes Gordon - Thank you for your answer and interest. Wondering if medication meant only pills/tablets etc. I was hoping to convince Capita that psychotherapy can come under Medication as this helps my son's health issue. I think someone on this forum remarked that medication in the form of pills helps short term illness quickly (headache for example) while psychotherapy works slowly over a long period to help with long term issues.

I think you are defeated by the term "psychotherapy" itself,

phycotherapy

Both medication and therapy are legally defined for PIP.

“Medication” means medication to be taken at home which is prescribed or recommended by a registered –
(a) doctor;
(b) nurse; or
(c) pharmacist.

“Therapy” means therapy to be undertaken at home which is prescribed or recommended by a—

(a) registered –
(i) doctor;
(ii) nurse; or
(iii) pharmacist; or

(b) health professional regulated by the Health Professions Council,
but does not include taking or applying, or otherwise receiving or administering, medication (whether orally, topically or by any other means), or any action which falls within the definition of “monitor a health condition”.

Hi Gordon, does a CPAP machine count as therapy? It keeps the throat airways from closing by use of air. Lack of oxygen to the brain would be the result of a closed airway.
The machine has a built in wireless connection that relays a detailed report to the chest clinic at Derriford Hospital.
Supervision would be a factor while the claimant is sleeping day or night a carer would check periodically that the claimant is wearing the mask and the unit is working satisfactory.
Observation of my C Pap machine, I regularly remove the mask unknowingly which could have fatal consequences.
Would it pass as a needed therapy?

Hi Ferret Whisperer

I would not class CPAP machine as therapy, I would class it as an aid, as you state it helps keeps the throat airways from closing by using air. The machine also relays a detailed report to the chest clinic at Derriford Hospital.
