ESA Income Based was created by Paul
I'm going to get married soon and was wondering how much my ESA will be reduced by if she works 24 hrs a week?
also how much does it effect ESA if she has money in the bank ?

It will depend on what type of ESA you are receiving.

Legacy ESA where the Contribution component only is in payment and New Style ESA will not be affected by your wife's earnings.

Legacy ESA with the Income Related component will be reduced £ for £. If you are also entitled to ESA(CB) then the ESA(CB) will remain in payment if the ESA(IR) component is eroded which would be likely.

If you are only eligible for the ESA(IR) component, it will depend on how much she earns and whether you are entitled to any premiums. However, a quick calculation based on the Minimum Wage would suggest you would lose all of any ESA(IR) being paid.

If you lose your ESA(IR), you also lose entitlement to the associated passported benefits such as free prescriptions and dental care, reductions for glasses, etc.

If you receive any ESA(IR), your household assets and savings will be considered, which means all of your and your wife's monies. There is a lower limit of £6000 after which a £1/week deduction is made for every £250 in excess and an upper limit of £16,000 after which entitlement to ESA(IR) is lost.

Thank you for your reply Gorden.
The DWP told me I qualify for Income and contribution based ESA so does that mean although I could lose my income based ESA I would still receive contribution based ESA?
Thanks

Hi Paul

You are correct, you would loose your means tested benefit but keep your contribution based benefit.
