Family abroad was created by Unique1
My daughter and grandchildren live in Canada I receive PIP , housing benefit and council tax benefit I will also be due my pension this year so ESA support group will cease then.
I am afraid to contemplate visiting my daughter who I miss greatly due to having to inform the relevant benefits as above. My anxiety makes me fear contact with them, any trip would be planned out well, it would only ever be for a 2/3 weeks visit maybe twice over year.
What is it they wish to know and what are the reasons they wish to know of a trip such as this,I think if I new more about their reasoning then maybe I wouldn’t be so afraid to inform them of a trip,I feel afraid that in particular PIP may think if I can go visit my daughter on my own I don’t struggle enough to weren’t PIP payments. I would be staying with her and she would be taking care of me when I got there I would be dropped off and collected …I don’t get the mobility PIP I receive PIP for mental health problems GAD ,anxiety etc.
It’s a shame as I am missing out on seeing my family, though the fears I feel about informing the various benefit offices
Thank you

Hi Unique1
All you have to do is inform the DWP if you are going on holiday for two or three weeks, in case they try to contact you while you are away. They won't be interested in the ins and outs of why you are going. You are allowed to claim benefits and go on holiday. You don't even have to phone them. Put it in writing (keep a copy) and go and visit your family.

Thank you ,I’m was particularly worried that DWP may say if I can travel abroad having anxiety I’m not entitled to PIP …it sounds like they won’t by what you say. I would be extremely anxious travelling but it will all be arranged for me. I would love to see them but have always thought I would be penalised for it somehow or they would use it to say I’m fit and not struggling with anxiety etc
Thank you

Hi Unique1
If you are going abroad for less than four weeks why put yourself through all the stress, it is 13 weeks for PIP and 4 weeks for ESA. The day you leave and the day you return should not be counted. See
www.gov.uk/claim-benefits-abroad/disability-benefits
If the claimant is only receiving Contribution Based ESA then the claim is usually suspended if the claimant exceeds the limits, if they are only receiving Income Related ESA then the claim will be closed and as a new claim would be required, this may require a claim for Universal Credit.
The law on this is black and white on this subject, so if your absence extends to more than 28 days even if it was originally planned for less, then, your ESA would stop, if you claim it.
If you go abroad, you can continue to get Universal Credit for one month.
You must:
* be eligible for Universal Credit when you’re going abroad
* remain eligible for it while you’re abroad
* tell your work coach that you’re going
