Telephone Consultation for renewal/review tomorrow. How in-depth will it be? was created by Hopefully Helpful
Hi there,
We submitted my son's renewal form July '22 and had notification of a face to face which I changed to a telephone consultation because of being clinically vulnerable to covid.
The appointment letter states: " One of our health professionals has looked at the information you sent to DWP, as well as any further information they asked for from the people involved in your treatment or care. After doing this, we have decided that we need to have a consultation with you to help us better understand the impact of your health condition or disability."
(It makes me think one of the numerous doctors he is under, has written along the lines of "he's fine since starting this medication"!)
Should we expect this consultation to be as in-depth as the first assessment was when he first claimed PIP 5 years ago, i.e. having to answer all of the questions again from scratch, or an update of changes? The letter says to allow an hour but we're aware it could and possibly will last longer.
Last week, we sent the DWP an update of changes to health conditions since the July '22 review and supporting medical reports and medication list. I will ask if the IAS health professional has been forwarded them by DWP. If not, how should my son handle this in the call? The newer changes to his health have even more impact on mobility, pain etc and need to be taken into consideration. Is there a good way to include this in the call and ensure it is noted? He now has metastases of a removed brain tumour occurring and being scanned quarterly and treated frequently. Are there good keywords to use e.g. sarcomas; malignant that would carry weight in a consultation?
Our first experience with PIP was dire (0 pints, MR refused, Appeal lodged, 18 points awarded before appeal date), like many of us here, and it has made us so wary and nervous of any dealings with DWP.
Any insights, tips, warnings will be very gratefully received.
Thank you for reading my long post.

Hi Hopefully Helpful
If you have a look at the Guide to PIP claims and reviews, you will find information about what your son might expect at the assessment. Look from page 128.
benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/pip
It's impossible for us to tell you how many questions they will ask, because it depends on the assessor, what they have read beforehand and what further information they might need to complete their report. Some assessors don't read previous reports until they have carried out the assessment, so that can also have an impact on what they might ask. The assessment could be longer - quite a few members have had ones that have lasted an hour and a half - some even longer.
If you only sent an update to the DWP last week - I would be very surprised if it had been processed and updated on the system. He should mention anything that is relevant to his case and say if any additional evidence has recently been sent.
There aren't any specific keywords that you should use. You can't even guarantee that the person who is assessing him will have any knowledge of his condition. However, I would expect them to understand the word malignant, and if that's applicable, your son should use it.
Tip: You should make a covert recording of the telephone assessment., even if you have asked them to record it.

Thank you Bis for your reply yesterday.
We got a call this morning cancelling and rescheduling the appointment for two weeks time. Very deflating after hours of revising and "rehearsing".
The plus side of this could be that the latest additional evidence will be loaded onto the system and read by the assessor before the next appointment.
Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Hopefully Helpful
I am so sorry that it was cancelled. You may not be able to face it, but you can ring the DWP and find out if the new information has been entered into the system. If you're going to do it - I would give them another week.
