Hey, I have FND in the form of seizures, tics, involuntary movements and pain.

I’m looking for your thoughts on how functional seizures may impact the descriptor in the test.

My seizures can result in loss of consciousness and almost always there is a loss of awareness.

I took the ESA test and wondered if functional seizures are covered by the descriptor

10. Consciousness during waking moments*
10a. At least once a week, has an involuntary episode of lost or altered consciousness resulting in significantly disrupted awareness or concentration. (15 points)
10b. At least once a month, has an involuntary episode of lost or altered consciousness resulting in significantly disrupted awareness or concentration. (6 points)
10c. None of the above apply. (0 points)

I note the key word: significantly disrupted awareness or concentration.

After any seizure you would want to rest, so I guess concentration would be impacted.

Hi AnxiousAnonymous

From your description I would say that you would come under Activity 10, Consciousness during waking moments but it would depend on the frequency of an involuntary episode.

DWP advice suggests that a risk is substantial where the harm or damage to your health would be serious, and could not be prevented or mitigated.

Okay,

Can I just clarify?

Does this include seizures where awareness or loss of control of the body?

Or is this simply referring to "consciousness"

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking but I will try and answer.

If this is a case of someone losing control of their body but remaining fully awake during the episode then I do not think this Descriptor applies but it would still be worth providing information about it in the hope of scoring.

If there is a loss of consciousness or sufficient disturbance to render them unable to react to the world around them then I would say yes, by this I mean mentally, not physically.

Be aware of the frequencies involved in the Descriptors;

- at least once a week
- at least once a month

as these will be adhered to strictly.

You will need to provide evidence in support such as emergency treatment resulting from an episode. Remember, this is not about the possibility of an episode occurring but one actually happening.

Non epileptic / functional seizures don’t require hospital admission. However, they are managed by a neuropsychologist who can offer input if necessary if the DWP request it.

I would ask in this instance, would an account from a carer as to frequency and duration be of use if there are no hospital admissions because they are non epileptic / functional.

I wasn't suggesting hospital admission but rather attendance at A&E or your local GP's day clinic for minor injuries.

Yes, a letter from a carer or someone who sees you frequently would be helpful.
