ESA to UC Migration (voluntary) was created by Gentle
Hello
Mums benefits are PIP + ESA (support group)
I've read the migration guide but would appreciate confirmation on:
1) Only difference in Natural vs Voluntary migration, is natural is not a choice?
2) Are the chances of a WCA review being requested lower on either?
3) How would I apply for voluntary migration, is there a special form?
4) Ideas on timescales to migrate?
For the last few years my mum opted to pay rent instead of applying for HB as the forms/assessments cause her stress, but hoping this voluntary migration will get her UC with the LCWRA element which then I can apply for HB with minimal disruption for her.
TIA

Hi Gentle
Natural migration - If you have a change of circumstances - such as starting or leaving a job, a partner leaving or joining the household - you will have to claim Universal Credit. In general, natural migration could be triggered if entitlement to your current benefit ends (prompting a need to claim a new one) or you become entitled to a different or extra benefit. It shouldn't happen when you make changes to benefits you are already claiming.
Voluntary migration - You can choose to move at any time by voluntarily claiming Universal Credit. Using this Benefits Calculator will help you work out if you might be better or worse off claiming Universal Credit but it’s important to seek advice if you’re not sure, because there is no going back once a claim for Universal Credit has been made. Voluntarily moving may be good for you if you are entitled to more support under Universal Credit but many claimants will also be entitled to less.

2) As you are in the support group you should be transferred to the LCWRA group, providing you do not end your ESA support claim when you apply for UC, when you apply for UC your ESA will cease.
3) As in (2) above, You apply for UC online.
4) When you apply for UC, it usually takes 5 weeks to receive your first payment, if during this time you need an advance, you need to ask your workcoach when you have an interview, when you have your appointment with your workcoach, your claim will then go live.
Unless your mum is of state pension age or living in supported accommodation then she will not be able to claim Housing Benefit, she would have to claim UC and claim Housing Element.

Thanks Gary,
Mum will certainly be better off on UC due to the housing element, as she does not get Housing benefit right now.
* Would applying for UC with the housing element be considered a "change of circumstances" and trigger a natural migration or would the voluntary migration apply?
* I'm assuming the application form doesn't select automatically but rather by a human during processing?
I'm trying to go for voluntary as I see it as the simplest path in regards to review and approval.
TIA

I fear you are confusing yourself, there are only two migration paths to UC; Natural and Managed, what you are referring to as a "voluntary" one is simply a Natural migration.

Hi Gordon,
You're right, I thought Natural and Voluntary were processed differently.
I will apply for UC online this week and report back.
Thanks both
